Bhutan often revered as the Land of the Peaceful Dragon, is still regarded as one of the last Shangrilas in the Himalayan region because of its remoteness. It`s spectacular mountain terrain. Varied flora and fauna and its unique ancient Buddhist monasteries. It is in the relatively unexplored pockets of Asia which allows only limited number of discerning travelers to enter the country in order to protect its fragile environment and culture. Bhutan a purely Buddhist Himalayan Kingdom is unsurpassed in its scenic majesty and vibrant culture.
The Kingdom shares with Nepal the world's greatest concentration of mountains and living heritage of Buddhism. The fifty minutes flight from Kathmandu to Paru can truly be described as a flight into fantasy. During the flight a first hand close up view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchanjunga and other famous peaks become reality. Biweekly flights between these two kingdoms have made easier travel to the long isolated Dragon Kingdom of Bhutan.

The experience of flying to Paro International Airport is rare, both exhilarating and nerve racking. During the flight, revel in the scenic views of the Himalayas floating on a sea of thick, fluffy clouds, with mountain peaks, particularly those of Mount verest and Mount Kanchenjunga standing tall above all earthly things. Upon arrival at the airport, our local guide will greet you in a traditional manner, offering Tashi Delek Khadar—the scarf of good wishes. You will then be escorted to a local restaurant in Paro town for refreshments, experiencing a fusion of the old and the new Bhutan. The town distinctly showcases how Bhutan has skillfully merged (and preserved) the traditional structures of the old town with the bold and modern buildings of the adjacent new town. You will visit the historical Paro Rinpung dzong, the seat of the
powerful Paro Penlop (governor), who once governed the western part of Bhutan. You will visit the interior of the
fortress and the inner sanctums. From there, you will take a short hike to Paro Ta dzong (watch fortress) which now
houses the National Museum of Bhutan.
After a sumptuous lunch, you will travel toward the north of Paro to visit the newly built Drukgyel Dzong. The fortress, which was in ruins, was reconstructed to its former glory on the command of His Majesty the King of Bhutan. While returning, you will take a short detour to visit one of the most sacred and oldest temples in the country, Kyichu Lhakhang. In the evening, we will travel to Thimphu. The journey takes about an hour and half – a scenic ride through meandering mountain road. Relax and enjoy the ride.
Thimphu has the power to challenge your preconceptions about Bhutan as a secluded kingdom. With a population of over 120,000, the city seamlessly blends modern and traditional cultures. Walking along Norzin Lam (main street) reveals a kingdom emerging from seclusion, earnestly catching up with the rest of the world. Thimphu's unique harmony between the old and the new is a testament to its captivating beauty. Anticipate a bustling day filled with exploration and experiences. Following an early breakfast, your journey begins
with a visit to the Folk Heritage Museum. Here, you'll encounter a rich display of household tools and
appliances commonly used by Bhutanese farmers. Adjacent to this, a stroll takes you to the Institute of
Traditional Arts and Crafts, where the profound legacy of Bhutan's 13 arts and crafts is skillfully imparted to the next generation of students.

Just a two-hour drive from here lies Trongsa.
Trongsa, a modest roadside town linking the east and west, might seem ironic as the epicenter of Bhutan’s culture, history, and politics. However, the majestic Trongsa Dzong dispels any irony. For centuries, and until a century ago, Trongsa Dzong was the seat of Bhutan's most powerful leader. Today, this architectural
masterpiece serves as the office of the district administration and the monk body, preserving the rich legacy of Bhutan's past.
The formidable fortress, standing strong after many centuries, proudly houses over 25 different Buddhist temples and shrines. Following the visit to the dzong, a brief drive takes you to
Trongsa Ta Dzong (watch tower), now a museum with a rich collection of ancient artifacts and treasures. After
this enriching experience, you will head back to Punakha, Bhutan’s old capital
Punakha holds historical significance as the former capital of Bhutan. The magnificent Puna Dewai Chenpoi
Phodrang or the Great Palace of Happiness, situated at the confluence of the Phochhu (male river) and
Mochhu (female river), stands as a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. Within its walls lies the
preserved body of Zhabdrung, the theocratic leader who unified Bhutan in the 17th century. The coronation of the first King of Bhutan took place here, and the dzong serves as the winter residence of the chief abbot, or Je Khenpo, adding to its cultural and spiritual importance.
Following breakfast, embark on a visit to
the fortress, exploring the Kuenrey, the main temple within. This impressive temple boasts massive wall paintings
depicting a thousand Buddhas, the life of Lord Buddha, a fabulous display of past abbots, and a giant statue of Guru
Rinpoche, Buddha, and Zhabdrung at the forefront. Following this spiritual experience, a short excursion awaits you to the north of the Punakha valley. A brief hike leads to the architecturally exquisite Khamsum Yuellay Namgyal Chorten. The hike, featuring a gentle walk-through paddy fields and rural settlements, culminates at the temple. Inside, you'll explore three shrines, one on each floor, and from the top open floor, revel in the beauty of lush valleys and captivating landscapes
After enjoying lunch at Lobesa, your next destination is the renowned
Temple of Fertility, also known as Chimi Lhakhang. This temple is a tribute to the divine mad monk Lam Drukpa
Kuenley, famed for his eccentric wisdom and unconventional approach to teaching Buddhism, often using explicit sexual innuendos. Following this unique cultural visit, your journey continues as you drive towards Paro.
Perched on a precarious cliff, 1,000 meters above the Paro valley, the iconic Tiger’s Nest or Taktsang, as it is locally known, is one of the most spiritually significant sites in Bhutan. According to legend, the 8th century Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche flew to this cliff on the back of a tigress, meditated in the cave, and vanquished evil spirits, converting them into protectors of dharma.
The trek to the Tiger’s Nest involves a 3-hour hike from the base, following a trail that steadily ascends through mixed pine forest. Just over halfway, you'll reach the Viewpoint Cafeteria, a perfect spot to indulge in refreshments. While sipping tea, coffee, or other beverages, you can marvel at the up-close view of the Tiger’s Nest. From the Cafeteria, it takes an additional 40 minutes to reach Taktsang, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the spiritual experience of this iconic site.
